Ruth Madoc was a Welsh actress whose career spanned over six decades on stage and screen. She achieved her greatest recognition playing Gladys Pugh, the lovelorn Yellowcoat entertainer with her catchphrase greeting “Hi-de-Hi, campers!”, in the BBC sitcom Hi-de-Hi! (1980–1988), earning a BAFTA nomination for the role. Beyond that iconic part, she appeared in numerous theatrical productions, films including Fiddler on the Roof (1971), and television programmes ranging from Little Britain to Casualty, with a career in pantomime, musical theatre and drama that continued almost to the end of her life.
