Peggy Mount became a celebrated British actress known for playing domineering, formidable women across stage, film and television. Her breakthrough came in 1955 as Emma Hornett in Sailor Beware!, a performance the critic Kenneth Tynan praised for its unforgettable “savage impatience.” She found television popularity opposite David Kossoff in The Larkins (1958–1964), and went on to play Mrs Bumble in Oliver! (1968). Her career later embraced more serious dramatic work, including an acclaimed performance as the title character in Brecht's Mother Courage, before she retired after losing her sight during her final stage performance in 1996.
