Kenneth Williams's nasal, high-camp voice and gift for outrage made him one of British comedy's most instantly recognisable performers. He built a following through radio comedy, including Hancock's Half Hour and the innuendo-laden Round the Horne, before becoming the most prolific cast member of the Carry On series by a wide margin, appearing in 26 of its 31 films — among them Carry On Up the Khyber — even as he privately dismissed the films as beneath him in his diaries. For two decades he was also a fixture of BBC Radio 4's Just a Minute, where his quick wit and theatrical indignation were given free rein. He remains one of the most quoted and impersonated British comic voices of the twentieth century.
