John Inman became a household name through his iconic portrayal of Mr Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries in the sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972–1985). He created the character's signature mincing walk and catchphrase “I'm free!”, which entered popular culture as the show attracted audiences of up to 22 million viewers at its peak. Beyond television, Inman had a successful stage career in pantomime and West End productions, and remained the only original cast member to reprise his role in the Australian adaptation of the series. His performance later made him a recognised figure in gay culture, particularly in the United States.
