Bob Hoskins began acting on stage in 1968 before his breakthrough in the 1978 BBC serial Pennies from Heaven. He became known for tough yet sensitive characters, earning critical acclaim for The Long Good Friday (1980) and Mona Lisa (1986) — for which he won a Cannes Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe, and received an Academy Award nomination. He reached his widest audience in the live-action/animated blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). He retired from acting in 2012 following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, after a prolific career stretching over four decades.
