Dame Barbara Windsor's six-decade career began with a BAFTA-nominated dramatic turn in Joan Littlewood's Sparrows Can't Sing (1963), but it was as the quick-witted, good-time girl of nine Carry On films between 1964 and 1974 — including Carry On Camping — that she became a national favourite. She found a second wave of fame late in life as Peggy Mitchell, landlady of the Queen Vic, in the BBC soap EastEnders, a role she played on and off from 1994 for over two decades, winning the 1999 British Soap Award for Best Actress. In her final years she became a prominent campaigner for dementia research and awareness.
