Arthur Lowe worked across theatre, film and television for 37 years, first reaching a wide audience as Leonard Swindley in the early years of Coronation Street. He became one of the best-loved figures in British sitcom history as the pompous, self-important Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army (1968–1977), a performance nominated for seven BAFTAs. His sole BAFTA win came for Best Supporting Actor in Lindsay Anderson's O Lucky Man! (1973). He continued working right up until his death from a stroke in 1982, despite failing health in his later years.
